Villa Mabrouka

Villa Mabrouka, the love nest of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergè in Tangier is a garden oasis on the outskirts of the Kasbah and a master class in how to evoke the elegance of yesteryear. Staying in one of the twelve suites and rooms feels like being invited to an intimate gathering in a private home, where it wouldn't be surprising to find the famous American socialite and Tangier resident, Barbara Hutton or Somerset Maugham, eating boiled eggs in silver cups at the white linen table. There are no books or photographs of YSL anywhere. Dar Mabrouka was not only the site of the happy marriage of "Yves and Pierre", but also that of European modernism and Moroccan architecture. Mabrouka means "blessed" and so is the position of the white house hidden behind the Kasbah gate, across a Moroccan courtyard, in a charming secret garden. Everything is refreshed by the sea breeze and filled with an airy lightness.

almost cinematic light

The art here is in the crenellated horseshoe arches, antique wall sconces, Moroccan glass lanterns, raspberry and chamomile-colored Murano chandeliers, framed 16th and 17th century Andalusian tiles and ceramics, and classical artifacts and mosaics. Syrian mother-of-pearl tables and an oyster-shell partition that belonged to Syrie Maugham - Somerset's wife and a pioneer of all-white interiors - are visual odes to Tangier's famous luminescent light, giving the feeling of being on the set of a movie.

A trip to Morocco

What a thrill to sleep in Yves Saint Laurent's room. A ceiling painted aloe vera green reflects a simple pea green cashmere blanket over the bed, accentuating the white space. The main house is also home to the Meknes suite, the Rabat and Taroudant suites. The other six suites are pretty white chalets scattered around the gardens. A journey to the main cities through the most elegant decor.

A brief introduction to Moroccan delights

The breakfasts served on the terrace are divinely old school. The plates are made from the finest French porcelain by Apilco. The teapots, cutlery and even silver salt and pepper shakers were designed by Conran for Wedgwood. Light lunches can be served by the pool, under fringed parasols: gazpacho, roquefort walnut salads and fritto misto. The fish is fresh, from local fishermen or the famous Tangier fish market, which makes the sea bass carpaccio with petals, monkfish with fennel and lobster risotto sensational.
